| Funky Beds n Stuff
evolved from the sleeping (or not) habits of two children.
After having tried all the traditional methods of sleep training without
success a different approach was required. Their bedrooms needed to be
individual, fun and inviting. Example case: The phone rings it's a lady wanting a pirate ship bed and matching treasure chest toybox for her 3 year old son. It has to be similar to the pirate ship at Alton Towers hotel! ; a quick visit to Alton Towers website to check out its pirate ship then pencil, paper and a lot of scribbling later a sketch of a pirate ship bed emerges. Another phone call, it's a dad who wants a racing car bed for his son who is a David Coulthard fan. Can we make one? Of course is the answer. Again pictures of the West Mclaren from the internet, F1 shop and magazines are pasted onto a board and a sketch of the bed is produced. Other inspirations for design come from ourselves, our children and customers ideas that need turning into reality. Once the sketches are approved by the customer, the size of bed and the price etc agreed, (the amount of detail available is limited only by the price the customer is prepared to pay) the drawing is transferred onto 8 x 4 sheets of MDF to make the side panels. MDF is used because it is a very stable material and does not twist or warp like wood, it also cuts very nicely and has a nice flat surface for painting. The panels are cut out and then routed to give a smooth rounded edge. The slatted base of the bed is made from pine, this is then attached to the sides before cutting and fitting the headboard and footboard and any other panels that may be required. There is a considerable amount of engineering effort required at this point! Once all the pieces have been cut out and routed it is ready to be assembled and painted. The bed is screwed together with machine screws into inserts, often where the screws show, decorative captive pop-top covers are used, or in some cases decorative brass screw cups. The colour is usually chosen by the customer or governed by the design of bed ie the West Mclaren and painted in the appropriate colours. The pieces are primed, rubbed down for a smooth finish before two coats of water based paint are applied, then the detail and finally two coats of certified child safe water based varnish. The same production methods apply to all furniture produced by Funky Beds n Stuff. Once painted the bed is reassembled for a final check before being wrapped ready for delivery to the customer. Furniture is normally delivered personally by Funky Beds n Stuff, we have regular deliveries to the UK, removal companies may be used if an earlier delivery is required. Childrens beds produced to date have included racing cars, pirate ship, space ship, girly with flowers, sleigh bed, tank engine, tractor, caterpillar and the best so far a fabulous four poster bed fit for a princess. Other pieces of children’s furniture include toy boxes in many different colour combinations with varying designs on the front, desks and chairs, chair chests, tables and chairs, headboards, shelves, wardrobes, rocking chairs and clocks. Delivery stories; The best was the Pirate Ship and matching treasure chest, we were treated to a champagne reception and buffet and an official launching of the ship once it was installed in the bedroom. We have since been asked to make a wardrobe to match and were fed and watered once again when we delivered it. We have met lots of lovely people and delighted lots of young children with their dream beds and furniture and we have been asked to make matching pieces by satisfied customers numerous times. Our daughter's response to her four poster bed was "I love it thousands". |
